How to Select the Best Electric Skateboard

How will you know if you’re picking up a killer ride, or wasting your money on some bunk board?

There are  five major specs to check out before spending a dime , and we’ve made of a summary of each one below to make things easy. We’ve also included them in each board review on this page to help you pick a sick ELBO.

Range

Driving Range

This is how far you will be able to ride the board while still making it back home on one charge. There’s nothing worse than running out of juice and having to walk 5 miles back to your place, so the longer, the better.

Self balancing scooter speed

Speed

This one is self-explanatory, and the most fun of all the specs. The choice is yours, how fast do you want to go? The fastest speed recorded on an electric longboard was 59.55 mph, but you can typically expect between 16 to 25 mph speeds.

Weight

Weight

This spec affects two aspects of owning a motorized skateboard. First of all, if you run out of juice are you going to be able to carry this thing home? Secondly, it affects performance. Heavier boards need more powerful motors to keep you speeding around, while lighter boards can lack the stability a skater needs.

Charging Time

Charging Time

On average, an electric skateboard takes about 4 hours to recharge. Leaving it to charge at night is the easiest way to make sure your board is ready when you are. It’s always good to know how long this will take so you can be ready for your next session.

Electric Skateboard motor

Motor

Just like a good whip, the motor on your ELBO is going to make all the difference. There are several different types to consider, and even multi-motor boards that pack a punch. Any of them are going to give you a smooth, free roll.

Taking the above specs into consideration, we’ve compiled a list of the Best Electric Skateboards for Sale 2023. Take a look at these top 9 ELBOs to find a board perfect for your style.

Halo board electric skateboard

The second powerhouse to make the list, the Haloboard is pushing wattage even further. An  amazing 3000 watts are produced by this board’s dual in-hub motor, sending you flying through the streets at up to 22 miles per hour . Meanwhile, regenerative breaking allows for rapid stops when you need them.

The concave design on this board gives you all the control you need to carve through turns and tear up the streets. A traditional grip sticks your feet firmly in place, while an ergonomic remote keeps you in control of the ride. As for durability, the  board is made from nearly indestructible carbon fiber with strong damage-resistant coating . Go ahead, get rough with it.

The Haloboard could stand out from the rest on looks alone. If James Bond rode a motorized skateboard, we imagine he’d choose this one. This is thing is sleek!

It isn’t just the metallic black, stunning beauty of this board that nets it a spot on the list, though. The LG Lithium-Ion batteries are fire safe and made to last, allowing any skater to make this board their daily cruise without fear of it wearing down or wearing out.

It also accommodates its rider with a Bluetooth connection for the remote that makes riding it a piece of cake.

With a max speed of 22 mph, this is one of the fastest electric skateboards 2023.

Actron Electric Skateboard Blink S2

If you’re looking for one rad model, the Blink S2 is right up your alley. Stylish green wheels compliment the traditional looking deck, but that’s only the beginning of this board’s features.

Straight out of the Silicon Valley, this Cali board features ACTON’s brand new dual hub motors that will keep you cruising through any urban terrain.

Boasting 1000 watts, it’ll get you from point A to point B in no time at 18 miles per hour. While it isn’t the fastest board on the market, the other features included are worth the investment.

When the sun dips down behind the horizon, the Blink S2 features  integrated high powered LED’s  right under the deck’s nose. They make cruising at night a blast while making you that much more noticeable to drivers, and they look rad. What about durability, though?

Canadian Maple trees have gone into the deck, while bamboo has been used to create vibration absorbing stocks. This combo makes for a very durable board while allowing skaters the maneuverability they’re used to.

Last but not least, you can download their app on your Android or iPhone to record your routes, log your miles, and even take snaps of your sessions. With  regenerative braking, a 14-mile range, and a light weight of only 12 pounds, this is on versatile board .

A major bonus: These boards are approved for airplane transportation.

  • Maximum speed – 18 mph
  • 14-mile driving range

Acton Blink Lite

The Blink Lite could be considered the little brother of the Blink S2. Weighing in at only 7.7 pounds, it is currently  one of the lightest boards on the market . That’s a huge bonus if you happen to run out of juice.

With a single hub motor, you’ll be able to zip around at up to 10 miles per hour. Granted, it’s not the fastest board out there at only 450 watts, but it might be the  best electric skateboard for beginners .

This board is also a great option for a simple commute to work, getting from one class to another, or just heading down to the corner store.

The Blink Lite is also compatible with the ACTON app. Just like with the Blink S2, you will be able to record your routes. Log your miles, and take snapshots of your sessions. Also like its counterpart, the deck has two LED lights built in right underneath the nose, and is equally as durable.

Regenerative braking allows for quick stops when you need them, and the Lithium-Ion batteries are made to last. The charge time is a little longer on this one at 2 hours, but it still makes for one good looking board to cruise on.

  • Maximum speed – 10 mph

With the Hellfire from Ride Genesis, skaters are getting an awesome board for a great deal. Running on 18650 Lithium-Ion batteries, you’ll be able to ditch the typical commute while speeding around at 20 miles per hour. Even more impressive, the driving range extends to a whole 20 miles on a full charge.

This board is on the heavy side at 16 and a half pounds, but it’s long driving range covers more than enough ground. So, shouldn’t have to worry about lugging the Hellfire back home. Skaters also have their choice of orange or green polyurethane wheels, each of which looks fantastic.

Airplane-grade aluminum housing ensures that the hardware will be safe on even the roughest streets, while the 8 ply Canadian Maplewood deck can withstand a beating too. With two bridges on the deck, you’ll be able to carve through any turn with ease while maintaining the stability a skater should expect from a good board.

A unique feature on the Hellfire is its Li-Ion battery powered remote control. It has all the same functions you’d expect on a motorized skateboard remote and fits smoothly in the palm of your hand, but it does need to be charged for 30 minutes when it runs out of juice. However, a single charge is going to last you a long time. The benefit? Zero connectivity issues and no cords.

Specs:

  • Maximum speed – 20 mph
  • 20-mile driving range
  • Brushless DC in-hub motor – 520w
  • Weight – 16.5 lbs

The Swagboard from Swagtron lives up to its name with sick looks and a smooth ride. A 7 ply Canadian Maplewood deck give skaters all the maneuverability they need to tackle the streets. Some of the features we really liked about this board were all in the durability, though.

The polyurethane wheels can take a beating, and the board is tough as nails, but it’s the cover on the motor that really sets this one apart from the rest. It features patented SentryShield technology with layered battery protection, making it  one of the safest and most durable motors on the market .

Skaters can travel at speeds of up to 11 miles per hour for 10 miles on a full charge. It isn’t the longest driving range out there, but the board only weighs 9 and a half pound. Plus, it features two handles to make carrying it a breeze.

The board’s ergonomic design makes it  easy for beginners to learn how to ride while still offering a smooth experience for the more advanced skater . There’s also a 1-year warranty on it, so you know your investment is protected.

The Swagboard’s remote is packed full of useful features like a cruise control option for easy riding. It also features a screen that displays your current speed and battery level so running out of juice will never be a surprise event. This is another rechargeable remote, eliminating the need for buying batteries.

This board is fun to ride, safe, and very cheap, making it  the best cheap electric skateboard 2023 .

  • Maximum speed – 11mph

Speed, durability, and an ease of use are what you can expect with the Bench Wheel B2 motorized skateboard. Its dual brushless motors crank out 1800 watts to help you reach speeds of up to 18.6 mph at the push of a button. The board itself is on the heavy side, but with a 12.4-mile driving range, you’ll be able to get where you’re going and back.

The recharge time is only 3 hours, which is decently quick for the amount of power the motors produce. What we love about this board is the more traditional design, and the bamboo styled underside. It just looks fantastic, especially with its red wheels.

The remote on this one is held more like a trigger, which fits wonderfully in your hand while riding. With a Lithium-Ion battery, you won’t have to worry about replacing AA’s every so often. Plus, it features a speed mode and an energy saving mode that you can switch between at any time.

Solid construction underneath the deck makes this one durable board. Feel free to push it to its full potential without worrying about any damage.

At first glance, the Airwheel M3 Electric Longboard might remind you somewhat of an RC car. That’s because its classic longboard design is supported by large, all terrain rubber tires. You could seriously take this longboard anywhere for some unique sessions.

Built in damper masses add to the stability and overall durability of the board, giving it a stronger anti-skid capacity. Sliding the remote forward allows you to accelerate, holding it still allows you to cruise, and sliding it back allows you to move backward as well as decelerate and brake.

It features a powerhouse of a motor underneath the deck that is incredibly durable. You can expect to  reach speeds of 20 miles per hour for up to 12.4 miles . As for charging time, you’ll only need 2 hours to reach a full charge on the M3.

The only drawback we have about this all terrain electric longboard that it weighs a whopping 25 pounds! Granted, the ability to ride this board over the roughest of terrain is a fair trade off, but this isn’t something you’re going to want to lug around. Thankfully, the Bluetooth supported smartphone app will keep you up to date on your battery level.

All in all, this off road electric longboard stands out with its rugged under workings. Even with such a massive motor system, the M3 responds just like a regular skateboard for a smooth ride.

The ability of this board to navigate tough terrain while still being a smooth ride at normal terrain going at a good speed makes this the  best off road electric skateboard  right now.

Specs:

  • Maximum speed – 12.4 mph
  • 4-mile driving range
  • Rear wheel motor

Electric Skateboard Motors

The motor is the key factor that separates a regular skateboard from an electric one. There are a variety of motors to choose from, ensuring you can find something that will suit your style.

When it comes to choosing a dual or single motor, it’s important to understand that neither one is essential faster. A dual motor is going to provide you with more torque and is better suited for larger wheels, whereas a single motor might have less torque but still offer a higher speed than dual setup.

If you’re looking for speed alone, what counts is the wattage the motor can produce. The weight of the board, carrying a backpack, and your weight will affect max speeds, but higher wattage means you can fly through the streets.

Now, braking is just as important as accelerating. Keep in mind that a  dual motor offers dual braking . Regenerative braking helps to ensure that you aren’t going to break your arm from having to bail.

Choosing the right motor can be a little difficult as there isn’t a whole lot of information about what makes one better from another. However, it is commonly known that HUB motors are more durable than belt motors.

When it comes down to it, you simply must decide what you will be using your motorized skateboard for. A daily commute? Heading to the gym? Sessions with friends? Racing? Will you be riding it on paved streets? Rough terrain? A skate park? Off-road?

What you need the board for will help you narrow down wat kind of motor you should choose based on its speed and durability.

How to Ride an Electric Skateboard

Learn How to Ride an Electric SkateboardRiding an electric skateboard or longboard isn’t all that different from riding a regular skateboard or longboard. The first thing you need to learn is foot placement. Make sure to keep your feet shoulder width apart while standing sideways on the board. Point your leading foot outward while keeping your back foot square with your shoulders.

It’s important to stay relaxed while you’re riding. Being tense can cause you to jerk and twitch, throwing you off kilter. Skating is meant to be a fun experience, so take a deep breath and enjoy the calm a board can bring. Just make sure to stay focused on your surroundings.

Try to avoid sudden and abrupt stops, as these can cause you to lose control over the board. The last thing you want is to be forced to bail and end up breaking an arm. While sudden stops aren’t always avoidable, give yourself plenty of time stop any time you can.

When you’re ready to get things going, use your remote accelerate while taking it slow and easy. Speeding around at 20 miles per hour is a ton of fun, but it’s something that you’ll have to get used to over time. The more you ride, the more comfortable your body will become adjusted to the increase in speed.

As with anything, practice makes perfect. If this is your first time riding a skateboard, or even if you know how to ride but this is your first time on a motorized skateboard, don’t get discouraged if you aren’t a pro on the first few tries. Before you know it, your muscle memory will adjust and your rides will get smoother even at full throttle.

A note on rainy weather: Some boards are made to hade light rain, or are even splash resistant. However, too much exposure to water can ruin your motor. Use your best judgment, and avoid heavily rainy days and large puddles.

Best Electric Skateboard Tricks

Safety Gear while riding Electric Skateboard After you’ve been riding your new board like a pro, you’ll probably want to try your hand at some ELBO tricks. Safety gear is always recommended, even when simply riding. So, make sure to protect yourself from injury.

First up is the Shuvit. Originally called the Ty Hop after famous skater Ty Page, this trick has all kinds of varieties. Here’s how to do the basic variation.

  • Place your lead foot right on the front of the board.
  • Place your second foot just a little wider than halfway on the deck.
  • Put pressure on the nose while pushing the board out with your back foot, causing it to lean forward while swiveling around on the front truck.
  • Swivel around a full 180 degrees and land back in the same position, and you’ve just pulled off the Shuvit!

Next up is the Tiger Claw, and it’s a very visually appealing trick. Here’s how it’s done.

  • Get yourself up to speed.
  • Step off of the board with one foot while using the kicktail to push the front of your motorized skateboard into your hand.
  • Grab your board on the top edge, close to the nose.
  • Throw the board back underneath while rotating it 180 degrees.
  • Quickly hop back on the deck, and you’ve just impressed your friends with the Tiger Claw!

This next one is called the Ghostride Kickflip, and it’s the perfect variant of the kickflip for the longer ELBO boards. Executed correctly, it’s a very fun trick

  • While you’re riding the board, quickly hop off of it
  • Still, in motion, kick the underneath of the deck hard enough to flip the board all the way around, so it lands back on its wheels.
  • Hop back on and continue riding.
  • That’s it!

Next up is the Cross Step, a fun and simple trick you can learn in no time. It’s a little different, as you’ll be moving up and down your board while crossing your feet over one another. Once you have it down pat, it will look as though you are dancing while rolling downhill.

  • Get yourself up to speed, and stand with one foot in the center with the other on the outer back edge.
  • Cross your back over the foot in the center.
  • Next, cross the center foot over the over to the outer front edge of the board.
  • Move your feet back to the original positon, or complete steps 1 through 3 backward.
  • Repeat that as many time as you like, and you’re doing the Cross Step!

This next one is known as the No Comply and is similar to a Shuvit expect you will be popping and flipping the board.

Electric Skateboard Trick

  • Start with one of your feet in the middle and the other on the center of the tail.
  • Make sure your center foot is leaning off the edge to make things easier.
  • Push diagonally on the tail to pop the board up and make it turn 180 degrees.
  • Let one foot slide off, preferably your center foot, while keeping the other on the board.
  • Turn your body 180 degrees with the deck, and you’ve landed the trick!

You’ll want to be going downhill to get the momentum for this next trick. It’s called the Stand Up Slide, and it is a ton of fun.

  • Build up your momentum while going downhill.
  • Turn your feet so that they are facing forward while keeping your body sideways.
  • Putting all your weight on your front leg, coast as long as you’d like before returning to your normal riding position.
  • That’s all there is to it. Simple, right?

Next up we have the Flat Top, and it’s another simple one to master.

  • Use your remote to build up speed.
  • Once you’re ready, situate your back foot as far back on the tail as you can, then push.
  • As the board pops, you’ll jump up.
  • Grab your motorized skateboard in the air and spin it 180 degrees.
  • Land back on your board to complete the Flat Top

These are some easy tricks to get you started on your motorized skateboard. Once you have them down pat, look up even more advanced tricks to show off at your next session.

We will do our best to continue to update this guide to the greatest electric skateboards and longboards of 2023.
