Guide to Selecting a Quality Electric Unicycle

Driving Range

Battery and Power

Here is where you start to gauge the difference in unicycles. A lithium-ion battery ranging from 400 W to 800 W will power most units. Your larger cycles will have a 1200 W version.

The racers will top out at 1500 W.

Self balancing scooter speed

Speed

Casual runs in the driveway or rolling up and down your neighborhood’s streets could mean you’ll want a unicycle that is more laid back and offers a low-key, yet enjoyable ride.

Battling traffic while commuting to and from work will require keeping better pace with those around you.

Rider Weight

Weight

Not only does this factor into the overall comfort and ride, but you may be tugging this thing as much as you’re riding it, particularly if you’re a city dweller.

Almost all unicycles have some type of handle, retractable or otherwise.

price

Price

Speaking of investment nowhere is this more apparent than price. Electric unicycles are not cheap, with some pushing over two grand.

Those higher priced models do come with a lot of bells and whistles, but if unsure of your long-term commitment a cheaper version may be the better starting point.

unicycle performance

Performance

Whether you’re a novice or pro, there are unicycles available for every skill set. Your overall needs matter too.

Tooling around your driveway or on neighborhood sidewalks won’t require the same power and versatility as commuting through an urban jungle.

unicycle range

Range

Range gets into how far you want or need to go with your unicycle on a single charge.

Most entry-level units are going to top out in the 15-mile range with the vast majority of cycles getting up to 20-plus miles on a single charge. The 1200 W rides can reach 40 miles between charges.

Your terrain, ride style and load all factor into how much you will be able to squeeze from your ride.

unicycle tire

Tires

Most tire sizes range between 14 and 18 inches and directly tie to the power of the unicycle. Your larger wheels are on pricier and more powerful models.

Small wheels won’t handle varied terrain as well as the larger, sturdier ones. If you’re riding at or near the weight capacity of the unicycle, performance can suffer as well.

extras

Extras

There’s a variety of tech available, though you will find that sometimes those add-ons can detract from the ride.

Nevertheless, Bluetooth speakers, LED lights and headlights for night riding all give the end user some fun options to consider and integrate into their ride style.

All electric unicycles also come tied to apps with a lot of neat tricks and monitoring functions to help you hone your preferred riding preferences.

Compact and lightweight, the One S1 comes from the folks at Segway, who popularized the personal electronic transposition device. They hit the mark again with a great unicycle that gives a lot of confidence to all riders.

Perfect for first-timers, the One S1 follows through on that promise with its sleek, no-frills design and ease of use. The app includes a step-by-step guide for beginners further enforcing the commitment to helping you learn.

Easy to carry and store when not in use, the One S1  checks in at a trim 25 pounds and handles riders weighing up to 220 lbs.

The extras on this single wheel are great. Customizable LEDs add some dynamic fun, and the app as mentioned earlier helps you control protocols for safety and speed.

You also get some piece of mind with the UL 2272 certificate, meaning it’s gone through some rigorous testing. Charging time is approximately 4 hours.

The One S1 is very well put together, but keep in mind it is not a powerhouse. A great, high quality electric unicycle for those starting out and looking to learn. There is a big learning curve though, as with all electric unicycles.

The  Inmotion V8 is a svelte, 30 lb. powerhouse that ratchets up the speed and distance.  Thankfully, Inmotion did not sacrifice comfort in the build.

By upping the performance, the V8 can handle a lot of different types of terrain reasonably well. Suited perfectly for a ride in the city, the V8 also keeps it smoothness when rolling across a rough spot in the pavement or just off the sidewalk.

The air filled tire and ergonomic pedals add to the relaxed ride and allow you to focus on enjoying the roll.

A bright front headlight offers the opportunity to ride at night and the programmable LED’s complement whatever style you choose to throw down.

Its compact size further cements its status as a great city-dweller. An excellent companion on a city bus or train it includes a convenient handle for carrying when not in use.

Safety wise, the V8 has an anti-spin button to kill the drive when necessary. Plus, it can carry up to 264 lbs.., so it’s no pushover with stability either.

Overall, the V8 is a wonderful choice for riders of all skill levels.

The Swagtron SwagRoller is a nice little ride with clean lines and a lot of extras that easily make it the most fun single wheel personal transport.

With  two, 14-inch tires it’s not a unicycle by traditional means , but that only adds to the flavor and gives the overall design a beefier, more futuristic look. The highlight, of course, is the  built-in Bluetooth speakers and LED lights , but the SwagRoller doesn’t compromise performance.

The 450 W battery can take you 12.4 miles between charges while carrying up to 264 lbs. The  double-wheel design also means more stability than most other electric unicycles.

The app is robust as well, and you can dial up a host of features. Boasting the ability to control speed and lean and track your travel data, it also allows you to set limits on how fast you go can. That last feature is a great comfort for parents who like to worry.

You can also set the LED’s to match your mood and riding style.

The SwagRoller is also certified UL2272 and comes with motor lock function and retractable handle.

If there ever was an electric unicycle, built for students, creatives and the very young at heart, the SwagRoller is it.

Great design and fast charge help to counter the Mohawk V3’s smallish motor.

A bit larger than other models in this segment, the  V3 is for the long haul with a protective shell that keeps the elements at bay.  The 14-inch tire does make us dread trying to max out the range as comfort could become a concern.

Though app-enabled, the V3 makes that less of a priority with a wonderful LED touchscreen display. Additional features like the Bluetooth speakers and headlight flesh out an already robust machine.

The mix of size and the small-scale motor does make this a solid buy for first timers and novices. The quick turnaround on the charge is also attractive to pros who may want a quick ride and don’t require their cycle doing any heaving lifting.

Whatever your skill, the V3 will have you to mastering the pavement.

So you want to go fast? Well, the Got-Way M-Super V3 is the ride you’ve been wanting.

The V3 is for the  experienced rider who’s ready to take it to the next level.  The sleek design and no-frills accessories, aside from a USB charger, hint at this Super V3’s top two draws, power and speed.

The large wheel and heavy weighting keep this unicycle solid, and the wide pedals give it a measure of comfort some other single-wheelers lack. Though the overall size can make it a burden to lug when not riding, you’re not buying it for the commute.

It includes front and rear lighting and the USB charger mentioned earlier is an odd, but nice addition to a cycle otherwise lacking in features.

Safety does become a concern when topping out at close to 25 mph, but the Super V3 does have the requisite warnings. The app allows you to set speed limits and drive smoothness as well.

If you want a rush and don’t mind a stripped down electric unicycle, the Super V3 is your ride.

King Song has several e-cycles on the market with the Artwheel being its universal ride. A nice mix of form, function, and extras ensures this ride appeals to riders of all types.

The Artwheel is heavy,  weighing in at a healthy 45 lbs. Thanks to that weight, this ride does feel a lot more robust  than some of the other offerings in this list.

The large pedals help keep you steady with the overall ride being very comfortable. The ankle pads are a nice touch.

Even with the extras that include a couple of  Bluetooth speakers and front and rear lights , safety takes center stage on the Artwheel. An elaborate alarm system warns you repeatedly when approaching top speed, though you won’t reach it until you log 100 miles.

Much like the Inmotion V8, the Artwheel is a draw for a lot of different riders and skill sets and is another good overall buy.

A step up from the Artwheel, the KingSong 16S packs a lot more punch than your typical 16-inch single wheel.

The magic here is the noticeable increase in power, achieved without sacrificing comfort and stability in the ride.

Moderate inclines are a cinch, and for use as a city commuter, it will do the trick. At 38 lbs.., it can be a bit much to walk with, but the handle does help negate that somewhat.

The 16S is versatile, and it would indeed be at home on several terrains.

On the technical side, the mobile app for the 16S is elaborate. There are a lot of customizable settings that are fun to tinker with and include options that allow you to calibrate the ride, speed, and alarm monitoring.

But you don’t buy these to mess too much with the app.

The 16S unicycle is very much a best of all worlds ride. Tight construction with a lot of power to spare this is an excellent cycle for those who want a great, multi-terrain experience.

More than anything the Solowheel Glide 3 looks good. By good, we mean really good.

Compact with clean lines and a beautiful exterior casing, this may be the best looking electric unicycle of the bunch.  The showstopper is the elaborate LED display that is programmable in a multitude of ways through the app.

What’s beauty if you don’t toss in some power to go with it? Thankfully, the Glide 3 looks fine there too.

The 800 W motor helps power one of the lighter 16-inch wheelers on the market.  The high, oval-shaped pedals aide in steering and comfort.

The battery meter provides a nice readout of the power level in clear view of the rider. You wouldn’t think that to be a big deal, but it’s a nice feature that should be standard on all rides.

For all of your other settings, the Glide 3 app is as simple and elegant as the cruiser itself.

A great ride with even better looks, the Glide 3 fits the bill for those wanting a robust cycle while turning as many heads as possible.

As far as no-frills convenience goes, you would be hard-pressed to find something better than the Airwheel X3.

Super l ight compared to other models, this 22 pounder is a great option for traversing short distances when walking or public transit is part of the journey.  Think New York City if you only require sidewalks and the subway.

Stripped down with not many extras, the X3 is seemingly built to get you from point A to point B, no questions asked. The  low speed and minimalist build make this a prime unicycle for beginners and novices.

The best feature is the fast, 90-minute charging capability. Yes, the range is a bit lackluster, but again, if your life revolves around quick trips, what more do you need.

It even comes with a set of training wheels should you want to take the safer route in learning to ride.

Overall, you’ll get good vibes from this little machine. First timers should also love the simplicity and the focus on ride capabilities.

From Ninebot, comes perhaps the niftiness, most futuristic cruiser on our list. The One C+ features a handful of beautiful appointments while providing more performance than entry-level cycles.

If the Glide 3 from earlier is the best looking, then the C+ is the most well put together.

On aesthetics alone, the C+ is top of the line. A retractable handle disappears directly into the unit, giving it a very agronomic feel. The app also adds quality with an interface that reflects subtle luxury.

The LED lights provide quite the show themselves, completely encircling the outer casing instead of the conventional bulb design on other unicycles. It’s a small touch, but one that makes sense.

The outer case is sturdy and lends itself to be swapped out with different shells should you not fancy the white on white scheme.

As to performance, the C+ offers nothing overly spectacular to separate itself from others in its segment. The tube tires do give it a soft, gentle ride and the unit as a whole does prove to hold up well in inclement weather.

Though its specs hover near entry-level models, the C+ is definitely aimed at the more experienced rider looking to step away from bulkier, more pedestrian models.

The big sibling to the X3, it repeats the low-key design approach and  ups the power and performance ranges.

Aside from the added wattage, range and speed, the X8 is a more substantial ride, and it’s amazing how a few extra pounds will stabilize the whole unit.

The charge takes 30 minutes more than the X3, but with the bigger battery that translates into only eight more miles in range.

Even though the top speed is a little tepid, the X8 is a solid commuter choice, as the combo of range and charge will do what is necessary for a handful of blocks.

Overall though, this is merely an upgrade over the X3. The appeal is broad enough to capture a lot of riders and should be of particular interest to those that like their rides pure and straightforward.

Riding an Electric Unicycle

riding a unicycle

As we discussed earlier, electric unicycles are not the easiest of the personal transportation devices to master.

With a great hoverboard, you’re rolling in few hours, on an electric scooter even less.

What makes the unicycle such a challenge?

Balance.

Oh, and the fact that it is has one wheel.

Gaining balance on that single wheel is the tricky part. It takes a lot of practice.

In the beginning, mounting the unicycle feels awkward. You have to have a foot on one pedal, then with the cycle in motion, step on to the other pedal and gather yourself from there.

If it sounds difficult, it’s because it is. It’s not the most natural motion, and as we said, it will require a ton of practice (resulting in a ton of falls too).

Once you get the hang of the onboard process, the rest will fall into place (you’ll still experience a ton of falls).

So not that you’re on how is one supposed to steer these things?

Your body of course.

Leaning forward or backward takes care of where you’re going and where you’ve been. Angling your body to the left and right will steer you in your intended direction.

Initially, you will instinctively want to use your entire body. That’s okay, as that is the best way to learn. This will, of course, lead to more falls, but that is part of the process.

As your confidence builds, you’ll realize that only slight motions are necessary which you will achieve with much less effort.

From there the sky is the limit. You’ll be tackling curbs, off-road paths and a host of other terrains with ease.

Just be sure to wear your helmet and pads.

FAQ about Electric Unicycles

Now that you have a complete picture of the in’s and out’s of electric unicycles, let’s touch on a few of the most commonly asked questions.

How safe are they?

Almost all unicycles have some alarm or warning system should speeds get too great or the wheel continues to spin.

Safe riding, however, is up to the rider.

Just by its nature, an electric unicycle is an inherently risky instrument. Starting out, you will fall, which can lead to injury. But that is part of the process

Once past the learning stage, safe riding requires you to be diligent and aware of your surroundings at all times. Riding beyond your capabilities or taking unnecessary risks is a recipe for disaster.

Are they a viable mode of transportation?

Absolutely.

The unicycle’s compactness makes it perfect for cities where your commute involves the familiar routine of sidewalk – bus – sidewalk – subway – sidewalk.

They are also great for students who need to get to and from class. When inside, the vast majority of unicycles will tuck neatly away under your seat or between your legs.

How much do they cost?

The range is wide, and the top end models can get expensive. On average, your entry-level rides start between $300 and $500. From there, you can spend well over $1,000.

How long do they last?

To make sure you get an EUC that lasts a long time, make sure you buy a quality unit.

How long it will last also depends on how you ride it. If you don’t overuse full power, and stay on good roads it will last a lot longer than if you always go full speed and jump around on dirt trails.

Can anyone ride these?

age limit for unicycle ridersYes and no.

Not for the faint of heart, the target audience is 18 to 35 with very little fear.

As we’ve also outlined, all unicycles have a weight limit. One reason is performance suffers the heavier the load a unicycle carries. The harder it works, the faster the battery drains.

The other reason is safety. At a certain point, too much weight on the foot pedals could cause failure and damage to the device and potential injury to rider.

One more point is that unicycles are far more advanced and challenging to ride and control. We advise you follow each manufacturer’s age limit recommendations.

Final Words on the Best Electric Unicycle

We made sure to keep the mix eclectic and varied so you can hone in on the things that may excite and interest you most.

At first glance, it may seem easy to pick out the one just for you.

As we mentioned earlier though, there is a lot of crossover between cycles, so you’ll want to be sure you do your homework.

Make a list of what you’re looking for and try a few out at local dealers.

Read reviews and take note of repeat complaints or problems. Does it stem from user error or are the issues related more to design and manufacturing?

Regardless of which electric unicycle you purchase, make sure it has the proper safety ratings and a reliable track record.

A little extra legwork on your part can go a long way to making your purchase and ownership of an electric unicycle fun and enjoyable.
