Electric unicycles seem to be the natural successor to the popular hoverboard as they can be seen on streets and sidewalks all over.

Their very unique design and compact nature makes them very popular among college students and urban commuters.

However, there is often a deal of difficulty when trying to get one of these vehicles on a plane.

From their size to the battery issues that airlines have, you may face some obstacles when trying to take an electric unicycle on a plane. Let’s see what those could be.

The Issue With Electronics on Planes

Airlines have rather strict policies when it comes to what you can and cannot bring on a plane. With something like an electric unicycle, their primary issue is the battery inside the unit.

Many airlines have had too many issues with things like laptops and other devices with large batteries that they are not eager to have them fly.

Planes are sensitive machines and something like a battery catching on fire or exploding could result in a serious disaster. Let’s see some considerations to make when trying to fly with an electric unicycle.

Considerations When Trying to Fly With an Electric Unicycle

The Airline

The first decision you need to make when trying to figure out if you can fly with the electric unicycle is checking the rules of your airline.

Most American airline companies have rather strict rules on electronics with large batteries, but it is always worth checking with specific airlines before coming to a conclusion.

When you call an airline for answers, you can get a direct yes or no as to whether or not you can fly with the electric unicycle. You may be pleasantly surprised to learn that they can allow you to fly with it if you follow special rules and store it properly.

The Battery

The real source of flying with things like hoverboards and electric unicycles has to be the battery that is contained within them. As we mentioned earlier, the lithium-ion batteries in most electronics can be dangers to the plane if they are above a certain size and power output.

If your unit has a smaller battery that can be removed from the unicycle, you may have a better case for getting it on the plane. Additionally, if it is not a lithium-ion battery, you would want to call the airlines or FAA to see what their policies are regarding that style and size of battery.

The Size

The final consideration to make when trying to fly with an electric unicycle is considering the overall size of the unit. Since most of these units are rather large and wide, you will need to make sure it will even fit the weight and size requirements of your flight’s carryon policy.

When you know what the airline will and won’t allow you to fly with, you can fly with peace and confidence in knowing you made the right choice with what you fly with.
